He loves, He hopes, He waits

So the Synod is over…for now. But, we’re left with much to pray about before this all comes to another summit next year when the forces promoting friendship with the world will meet up in a Roman Meggido of sorts, battling against the inerrant, unchangeable truths of Christ and Holy Mother Church. As if they stand a chance of winning. If what’s in the “Relatio Post Disceptationem (the Extraordinary Synod’s Midterm Report) “–despite the clarification at the end– is the new direction then, we’d better ask ourselves who it is we’re establishing friendship with. You are as unfaithful as adulterous wives, don’t you realize making the world your friend is making God your enemy?   Anyone who chooses the...

Why are you here?

Why are you here?

All summer I’ve been praying for my new fall Faith Formation class; the incoming 6th graders. Wonder who they will be? What kind of struggles will they bring with them? What are their home situations like? I don’t know them yet, but the Lord does and I’ve asked Him to prepare them and me for this upcoming year. The news cycle since we’ve last had classes has been over the top; wonder who will be the first child to ask me about Ebola or ISIS. Trust me, they will.   After much prayer, I’d like to open this year with a “mission statement,” of sorts. Something I sense the Lord pressing on my heart for them. Why are you here? That will be my first question to them. The response I expect from most is: my parents are...

Should We Call Down Fire?

Should We Call Down Fire?

When this story was announced from the world’s news pulpits this week, recalling God’s truth sorrowed my heart deeply:   Brothers and sisters: For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery. —Galatians 5:1   We seem to have made a choice to live by the flesh rather than the Spirit and,   …they are opposed to each other.   In our ‘hyper-tolerance’ we have yoked ourselves to the slavery of sin, yet this was never God’s intent for us…freedom is. This is why Jesus came: to set us free from the darkness of our own minds which lures us to live only as we want or desire. What will we who are on this journey of faith, do with our dismay? In our anger...

Fall in Love, Stay in Love

Fall in Love, Stay in Love

Christ in the Desert Ivan Kramskoi 1872   Isn’t He beautiful? Seeking His face; this has been the test of my Lenten journey.   Have you ever found yourself going along in your spiritual life saying your prayers, fulfilling the duties of your vocation, hungering for a closer union with God but, if I’m honest, allowing the cares and worries of the world to choke the Word in my life?   My spiritual director instructs me time after time…   Don’t pray on emotion….just pray; whether you feel the skies have opened and sense the consolation of God, or your Breviary might just as well be the newspaper.   Just pray, confess, keep seeking Him. Tell Him you love Him. And trust.   Enter an unexpected trial...
