Pray for the rising tide of religious hostilities

“A brief summary of recent trends monitored by the Pew Research study shows why political scientist Tom Farr refers to this as a global crisis.”   Not sure anyone’s really paying attention but, we should definitely be praying. +PAX

A Brutal Reminder

A Brutal Reminder

It’s a bit of a jolt. Holy Mother Church leads us from the glorious Hallelujah’s of the Christmas miracle and the birth of the newborn King of the Jews -God Incarnate- to today’s feast of St Stephan, the first martyr. We go from reading of the multitude of Heavenly hosts proclaiming:   Glory to God in the Highest and on earth, peace among men with whom He is pleased. —Luke 2:13   to today’s readings where we hear of a good man, Stephan,    filled with grace and power, working great wonders and signs among the people.   Who could possibly have a problem with this remarkable preacher?   A group of Jews in Jerusalem debated with him, but could not get the better of him, so they arranged to falsely accuse...

The ‘Silverless’ Saints

The ‘Silverless’ Saints

Today, September 26, we celebrate the feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian (died 283), Christian doctors, patron saints of physicians and pharmacists, and martyrs for the faith. Of learned skill in medicine, brothers Cosmas and Damian helped those in need out of Christian charity and love, never accepting payment in return. For this reason, they are often referred to as anargyroi, meaning “the silverless” or “the moneyless.” Since they were prominent Christians, they were among the first arrested when the great persecution under Diocletian began. Lysias, the governor of Cilicia, ordered their arrest as “Christians who cured various illnesses and delivered possessed persons in the name of the one called Christ; they do not permit others to...

Egypt’s Christians

Egypt’s Christians

Are facing a Jihad:   “Violent aggression by Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists, including those sympathetic to al-Qaeda, continues to be directed at one of the world’s oldest Christian communities, following the military’s break up last week of Brotherhood sit-ins.   The Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party has been inciting the anti-Christian pogroms on its web and Facebook pages.   One such page, posted on August 14, lists a bill of particulars against the Christian Coptic minority, blaming it, and only it, for the military’s crackdown against the Brotherhood, alleging that the Church has declared a “war against Islam and Muslims.” It concludes with the threat,   “For every action there is a reaction.”   Let our...

Truth is the Trumpet of Liberty

Truth is the Trumpet of Liberty

In a church I attended this week, the sermon was a bit…off. Maybe the pastor was having a bad day– I don’t know. But, when you begin to teach on the gospel with words of warning, that perhaps what Jesus is saying is not at all what He’s REALLY saying because the language has gone from Aramaic to Greek to English and were that Scripture to be substituted into the words of the Eucharistic prayer, well you’d see right off that they clash with what we know of our Savior’s call for …peace.   Here’s the gospel reading I’m referring to:   Jesus said to his disciples: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and...
