Once I settle in to my new job, I may be talking to Theresa about this. BTW, happy Feast Day Theresa! I won't be at the monastery tonight but God-willing, I will be going to Vespers there at 4 today. I bet if I saw it again I still wouldn't want to go down there! I have nightmares about dark and steep staircases like your photo. Don't know why - I've never lived with one or had a cellar like you did. But isn't it good to know it's never too dark for the Lord?!! blessings.Trish What a wonderful lesson, Caroline!

Comment on Solemnity of St Benedict ~ Always Welcome by Deacon David Backes http://www.bellofthewanderer.com/?p=2099#comment-5064 Deacon David Backes Mon, 11 Jul 2011 23:53:47 +0000 http://www.bellofthewanderer.com/?p=2099#comment-5064 Happy feast day, Caroline! Have you ever seen the "Book of All Saints," by Adrienne von Speyr? I think you would really like it. Adrienne von Speyr (1902-1967) was a Swiss doctor, a convert to Catholicism, and one of the great mystics of modern church history. Her spiritual director was the famed Hans Urs Von Balthasar. She's still not too well known in America, as her dozens of books have only begun to be translated into English. One of her great mystical gifts was that she would see the saints and others of history at prayer, and she would dictate to Fr. von Balthasar what she saw, while she was in this mystical state. "Book of All Saints" is full of the resulting insights into the prayer lives of lots of great saints, including Benedict, who she "saw" at his moment of recognizing his need to create the Rule. It's very inspirational. I love how it shows the doubts as well as the faith of these wonderful people. It's published by Ignatius Press. I also really love her four-volume series on the Gospel of John. Peace, David Happy feast day, Caroline! Have you ever seen the “Book of All Saints,” by Adrienne von Speyr?
